VSAN versus traditional storage
- [Rick] In this video will compare virtual machine storage using vSAN, versus the traditional approach of purchasing a physical hardware storage array. And so let's start with the very basic elements of this. Here we see a diagram where on the left in purple, we've got our virtual machine. And just like memory, just like CPU, the virtual machine doesn't actually have physical storage hardware. It doesn't have physical CPUs, it doesn't have physical memory. It's accessing a shared resource. And for storage, traditionally, we've had something called a VMFS datastore, or maybe an NFS datastore. So from the perspective of my Windows virtual machine here on the left, this VM needs to see the storage hardware will give it a virtual skuzzy controller. We will basically trick Windows into thinking that it actually has a physical storage adapter by giving it a driver for virtual skuzzy controller. So here we see the virtual skuzzy…
