- [Rick] In this video, I'll break down the basic concepts of fiber channel storage and how it can be used to create a vSphere data store. So let's start with a basic diagram. Now, fiber channel is one of the many storage options that we can choose from with vSphere. And it's very similar to ISCSI. It's a VMFS storage solution, and it's a way that we can connect to storage. Our ESXi hosts can format that storage with VMFS. Our ESXi hosts can boot from fiber channel storage, and we can directly access fiber channel using a raw device mapping. These are features that are specific to VMFS storage solutions. So let's take some time to break down the components of a fiber channel SAN. And for the moment, we're just going to focus on the storage array components and the network behind fiber channel.
