- In this video, I'll demonstrate the different methods that you can use to upgrade VMware tools on one or more virtual machines. So let's start with the simplest option first. If I just want to upgrade VMware tools on a virtual machine, I can right click it, and if there is an update available, if I go to Guest OS, you'll see here the upgrade VMware tools option will not be grayed out. Now, it's currently grayed out here because this virtual machine is on the latest version of VMware tools. If I wanted to upgraded a single VM, I could choose that option. Now, the reason that that may be grayed out is of course because I'm on the latest version of VMware tools. And if I got to edit settings for this VM, and under VM options, I expand VMware tools, I can say any time this virtual machine powers on, check for the latest version of VMware tools, upgrade VMware tools before each power on.
