LTI and LMS integration with lynda.com (BETA)

lynda.com can communicate with your LTI-compliant learning management system (LMS) using LTI version 1.1. If a user accesses our course from your LMS, we communicate back to the LMS when the user starts and completes the course.

We created a sample course and LTI cartridge to test whether your LMS is compatible with lynda.com using LTI. This test can be performed on the full lynda.com site. Once you are a paying customer, this test also can be performed on our mobile site. Here’s how:

  1. Set up lynda.com as a tool provider within your LMS using the following information:

a. Use Launch URL: http://www.lynda.com/portal/lti

b. Secret key: lynda.com

c. Shared key: lynda.com

Note: Once you are a paying customer, you will need to change your secret key and shared key.

  1. Download the sample lynda.com course as an LTI Common Cartridge and import it into your LMS as you would any LTI cartridge.
  2. Give a user in your LMS access to the course.
  3. Launch the course as the user, and then watch the videos.
  4. Check the status in your LMS. Two outcomes will be sent to your LMS as you progress through the course. When you start watching, a percentage complete value of 0 will be sent indicating that the course is in progress. When you finish, a percentage complete value of 100 will be sent indicating that the course is complete. Your LMS will use these values to calculate a grade based on what was configured by the instructor or LMS administrator.

FAQs

What version of Common Cartridge (CC) does lynda.com support?

Common Cartridge version 1.1. Use the following webpage to determine whether your LMS supports this version: http://www.imsglobal.org/cc/allccv1p1.cfm.

Can I download LTI-compatible course data for any lynda.com course?

Yes. You can download LTI-compatible data for any and every course in our library. However, for testing purposes, you can only download data for the sample course.

Do my users watch lynda.com courses from our LMS?

No. All users watch content directly on lynda.com. When a user accesses a course from your LMS, the course page will open in a new browser window.

How long do LTI sessions through lynda.com remain active?

LTI sessions remain active for 90 days after a user’s last interaction. We can change this setting upon request.

Do my users log in to access the lynda.com courses?

Yes. LTI provides secure authentication as well as LMS integration. Contact your Training Solutions Advisor for more information about LTI authentication.

Can my users access lynda.com courses on a mobile device?

If your users can access your LMS from a mobile device, they should be able to launch lynda.com courses from your LMS on their mobile device. Courses will open via our mobile site, not our mobile apps, and progress will be reported back to your LMS. If a user watches a course from our mobile apps, progress will not be reported to your LMS.

Can I integrate with lynda.com if my LMS is behind a firewall?

No. If your LMS is behind a firewall and not publicly accessible, lynda.com cannot send learning information to it.

Do all lynda.com accounts support LMS integration?

Only lyndaCampus and lyndaEnterprise accounts can use LTI to integrate with an LMS. Contact your Training Solutions Advisor for more information about lynda.com accounts and LMS integration.
