Join Steven Lipton for an in-depth discussion in this video How to use the exercise files, part of iOS Development Tips Weekly.
- [Instructor] If you've taken other courses, you're probably familiar with the classic downloads folder. For Tips and Tricks, we'll be using GitHub for exercise folders. You'll find the files at https://github.com/MakeAppPiePublishing. That will get you to the repositories. Click the Repositories tab at the top. You'll find everything here. I've labeled the download files for Tips and Tricks as Tips, followed by the video number, a small description, and then, either Begin for a begin-state file, End for a finished project and Extra for extra bonus material that might be involved with that project.
For example, the download for this video is Tips_00_Exercise_Files_Begin. It's showing on the list so you can just click it. But once this list gets long, you can search for Tips in the search bar. Click at the top, and type in Tips and you'll see just the Tips. Add a video number and it will find only the ones with that video number. I'll go ahead and hit Begin now. In the screen that appears, click the Clone or download button and you have a few options.
You can download a ZIP file of the repo and then unzip and use the project there. You can also get the project directly in Xcode if you have a URL for the repo. The easiest way is to get the Clone button and Copy to the clipboard. You could also copy a link from a document referring to the file or the address bar at top. Once you have it copied, let's go to Xcode. On your first time doing this, you'll have a few extra steps to get started. In Xcode, go to Preferences, and Source Control.
Make sure that Enable Source Control is checked. You can close this now. You can clone an existing project in two ways. In Xcode, on the Welcome to Xcode page, you can hit Clone an existing project. You can also hit Source Control and you'll see one active menu item called Clone. Select that. In the middle here it'll tell you to add a GitHub Account if you don't have one. But we don't need that for this. Instead, all you have to do is hit Command + V and paste in that URL and click Clone.
It asks you where you want to save it. And I'm going to save this to the Desktop. Hit Clone, and you're done. Now I'm also going to be doing a few things with playgrounds. So let's go back to GitHub again. I'm going to hit MakeAppPiePublishing. Go back here. And I'm going to show you how to do a playgrounds. Go to Repositories. Type Tips. 00 again. And you'll find that I have Exercise_Files_Extra which is a playground example.
Click on that. Click on the Clone or download and for playgrounds, you're going to have to use the ZIP file. So, go ahead and download the ZIP, open up the file. That's how to download from GitHub. All the files for Tips and Tricks you'll find as repositories here.
