- Just like a search engine, eBay search indexes pages of information specifically items for sale on the site. Let's explore finding merchandise on eBay using basic searches. Powerful eBay sellers know how buyers search eBay so that they can tailor their listings so that they're easily found. Helping buyers find your items results in more sales. So you're hunting for a unique and interesting cookie jar and you enter the term cookie jar into the search box. You'll see an enormous number of listings.
eBay suggests alternate keywords that you can use to narrow your search. These are suggestions the site presents based on popular searches from other eBay users. This sort menu changes the view to present the search results based upon your preferences. You can view items ending soonest, based upon their price, the seller's distance from you, or what's called Best Match, that's the default. Best Match is a sort of voodoo magic that presents items based upon a combination of search relevance, item popularity, completeness of the listing, the item's terms of service such as returns policy and handling time, as well as the seller's overall track record.
Now for someone who's highly visual select the Gallery view here to present tiles of gallery photos. Now this view is customizable permitting you to adjust the default view settings to provide a more robust or tighter viewing experience based upon what matters to you. Some of these customizations are only available in the list view since the gallery view focuses on showing large images of items for sale. If you make a mistake or you're not happy with the changes you've made to a customized view, you always have the option to restore the view back to eBay's defaults.
Okay, so let's go back and take a look at the search results again. Clicking on the Auctions button displays items where you can place bids. Now the Buy It Now button will serve up items that are available for immediate purchase today without waiting for an auction. Auctions can last up to 10 days so Buy It Now listings, also known as fixed price listings, allow for purchases when you need items in a hurry. Now what you'll discover is that keywords are very important and a powerful aspect of an eBay listing.
Finding an item depends upon quality, relevant keywords since the basic eBay search only looks at the item title. So let's see this in action. First we'll enter in iphone 6. I consider this a good search but look at the overwhelming number of listings that it pulls up. It's like one and a half million. I'm going to go ahead and enter in Verizon at the end and that should narrow it down quite a bit, which brings it down to around to 4,000. Now let's bring it down even more by adding color.
Silver. And you see that brings it down to a manageable number. Now I'm searching for a new phone and these search results show phones, accessories, related products for phones, but I just want a phone. So this category selection tool narrows it down. And the Features option here allows me to really narrow things down even further. When it comes to an antique pocket watch, I don't mind a ding or a scratch or maybe some unknown gooey residue that has to be cleaned off but, when I'm buying a phone, I always prefer to avoid inheriting someone else's dings and scratches so I buy new.
This option lets me see phones that have never been used. When the search results are really sparse and you want to expand the search dramatically you can include a search of the product descriptions by selecting this checkbox. To the immediate right of the search box is a drop down menu that spotlights listings in specific top level categories. Let's take the search back down to just iPhone 6 for a second. I'd like to point out the pagination option at the bottom of the page that permits you display up to 200 listings on each page at one time.
So let's say you've just realized that an important birthday is fast approaching and you'd like to send a meaningful gift out but you just don't have the time to hit the store and go shopping. You can quickly change the zip code here. This will show items that are near a particular zip code based on the mileage, and that's especially handy when looking for sellers near your gift recipient. The closer they are, the faster the gift can arrive to them. So you didn't find the exact item that fulfilled your wildest dreams and you've invested a tremendous amount of time putting this search together.
Why repeat this later? That would be a tragic waste of your time. Go head and click on Follow this search and what will happen is eBay will notify you any time sellers post new items that meet this specific search criteria. This will be covered in more detail later in the course. Now that you've absorbed the basics, let's move on to more advance searches.
