The limitations of kit and budget lenses

- Chances are if you buy a mirrorless camera, you'll have the option of adding a standard lens. This is often referred to as the kit lens. Now, this could be quite useful, as it generally covers a wide focal range. And it's great for just getting started with your camera. The challenge though, is that most kit lenses are budget lenses, and they often have compromises. They're good to get started, but they're not great. For example, with this kit lens here, you see that it has a nice, wide-open aperture at 3.5. And I can go ahead and maximize that there, and it looks pretty wide-open. But as soon as I zoom in, notice how the aperture changes, and it goes to 5.6. Well, the danger here is that if I was shooting video or doing something live, the aperture would actually change in the middle of the shot. Of if I was trying to use consistent settings or manual settings, it's not going to hold as I recompose the zoom. Same…
