A framework for tech ethics

- In the following chapters, I'll introduce a comprehensive methodology for using ethics as a design tool at every stage of the design and development process of a product or service. My goal is to give every member of your team, from the junior developer in-training on their first project all the way up to the CEO, the tools and agency to ask the right questions, identify ethical challenges and opportunities and build better solutions based on an ethical foundation. Now, keep in mind, this is just a methodology and it's not the only one. A lot of smart people are working on these problems and there are many solutions. That said, the methodology I'll show you here is easy to understand and implement and a great starting point for future exploration of tech and design ethics. In my experience, the best way to introduce tech ethics and ethical design to a project is through a design workshop. And the best way to understand how a workshop works is to see a workshop in action. That's why we're setting up this design studio behind me. Our task today is to use ethics to challenge and improve upon a new service idea called inventory. I'll facilitate the workshop and explain what we're doing, how these different exercises help us make more ethical design decisions and provide you with some background on the moral philosophies at the root of these ideas and why they matter to the tech space.
