Learn how to work with JSON data in Presto.
- [Narrator] Another type of data…that you'll come across for sure…is JSON data.…It's J-S-O-N is how it's spelled.…And what this is is…web data that is semi-structured.…So when you look at it, it has a format…but it's not always consistent.…So sometimes what you have is…data elements that may be missing…and if you're counting on them to be there…you're going to have to work a little further up the pipeline…to make sure that they're set up right.…But in Presto, we have a lot of functions…that help you work with that data.…
So, let's take a look at a couple of those now.…So the first one I want to show you…is how to inspect a JSON object…and see the size of it.…So, I'll log into Presto here.…And with Presto then I can do my queries.…I'll say select JSON underscore size.…This is our function.…And I need to pass in some JSON.…Now most likely you're getting it out of a table…or something like that…but for our demonstration purposes…I'm just going to hand type it in here.…So I'll start with the single quote…and then a curly brace.…
Data science expert Ben Sullins helps you get up to speed with Presto, and leverage it to accomplish a wide-range of data science and analytics tasks. He uses different interfaces with Presto—such as R and Tableau—and digs into the expressive SQL language that Presto offers for your analysis. At the end of this course, you'll know the key concepts of Presto and how to use them to take full advantage of your modern big data system.
