Why ethics matter to tech and design

- A big part of design is making choices for other people about what they can do and how they understand and interact with the world. Whether you're a designer, developer, product manager, CEO, or any of the myriad of other roles a tech company employs, you make design decisions every day about your product or service, and those decisions carve a path into the future for every person who interacts with it. Every day we build the future. It's a sobering thought and one of the many reasons why ethics has become such a hot topic in the tech world. The challenge is when we think we're talking about ethics, we're often actually talking about laws or regulations or even personal moral judgments, and it's easy to think of ethics as this bombastic set of moralistic rules imposed on us by some philosophers or government agents or virtue police judging our actions from high up in their ivory towers. The reality is ethics is already an integral part of our work because we are human and humans use ethics whether we think about it or not. What we need to do now together is formalize the ethics of our craft and adopt ethical decision-making and ideation as part of our everyday practice. Ethics in tech matters because we build the future for our users and for ourselves.
