What is a raw file and why must they be processed?

- [Instructor] Let's begin our course by taking a look at a RAW file. RAW files indicate that all the data seen by the camera's sensor is written to the file. There are such things as compressed RAW, but in general, a RAW file contains significantly more information than a JPG file. That's because the information is captured by the camera sensor, and then written to a file, but this is often more than can be expressed in an individual photo. One of the most important areas that stands out with a RAW photo is that things like white balance aren't locked. So if we take a look at some of our controls here, for example, for color, you see that we can change the white balance afterwards, seeing how it was captured as shot in the camera, letting Lightroom evaluate the scene, or using a preset for different lighting conditions.
