What are examples of productive questions?
- Productive questions are powerful but they're rarely used. Why is that? Part of the reason is that it feels easier to use other ways of communicating. If we feel hungry or tired we make a statement, I feel hungry, I feel tired. If you want someone to do something it's far easier to command them, do this or do that. Even if you add some politeness or phrase it as a question like, would you please do that? It's still another form of command. And even when we ask questions that are often answerable with just yes or no, are you busy? Did you watch a movie? You can often tell that a yes or no question is coming because they start with a verb: do you, will you, are you, can we, does she. On the other hand, productive questions usually start with question words: how, what, when, why, or who. Statements, commands and yes or no questions dominate our day because they take less effort.
