What are DNG files?

- [Instructor] In our previous example we were working with a RAW file. This was captured by a Sony camera. The settings that controlled how this file were developed were right here in the XMP metadata. These instructions can also be saved inside the Lightroom catalog, or exported ultimately as a sidecar file. This information allows the image to be handed off to other tools like traditional Lightroom Classic or Adobe Photoshop. And the instructions within can then develop the file. But Adobe developed the DNG format. This particular image you're seeing here was captured with the Lightroom mobile app on my iOS device. But other cameras also use DNG, particularly drone manufacturers and action cameras. A handful of traditional camera manufacturers have also adopted DNG, but in general most people shoot their native RAW format, but may convert to DNG on the way in.
