Get street photography tips from photographer Valerie Jardin. See how a professional shoots a famous city like San Francisco by focusing on just one neighborhood.
- Bonjour, I'm Valerie Jardin and today I'm in beautiful San Francisco. Although I'm better known for my street photography, today we are going to do a bit more than that. We are going to tell the story of a neighborhood. When you travel, and when you come to a big city, it's really easy to just try to see it all and capture pictures that are a bit cliche, or just get too scattered, and if you slow down a bit and focus your energy in a small area at a time and really explore and work on a series of storytelling images, you're going to have much better results and a much better photo album.
So whenever I travel, I try to picture the end result as a coffee table book that I'm going to make of my trip. So there are a lot of different shots that I want to capture. So today we're going to walk around the neighborhood, capture some iconic things, such as the cable car, but try to make pictures that are a little bit outside of the postcard shot. Also capture some of the local people, do some street portraits, see what's happening along the beach, and capture a lot of those details of everyday life that will really tie your story together.
I feel that with a fixed focal length, you work a little harder, and those limitations will make you a better photographer. So let's go and get some awesome shots!
