Using tone curves

- [Instructor] While the light controls are quite powerful, the use of curves is also a welcome addition. By default, tone curve is the option you'll see. This divides the image into four ranges of shadows, darks, lights, and highlights. As you make these adjustments, what happens is it pushes the image one way or the other. The top indicates the brighter areas, the bottom, the darker. So if we lift the shadows for example, you see that they get brighter. The tone curve really restricts you though to only a certain range of movement. So you can change that, but there are a few restrictions. To adjust the bend point here, you'll see that we can be a little bit broader if we want to open up more of those shadows, for example. Then I can come into the dark zone here, and pull up or down to affect that area. Notice how these work together. You may find yourself recovering highlights or lifting shadows. And again, these…
