Umbrellas

- Umbrellas are a great place to start with modifiers. That doesn't mean that they're beginner modifiers. You might never need a modifier besides an umbrella. The reason I say they're a great place to start is that they are very inexpensive for the size of the modifier you can get, they're very portable, they're easy to set up, and they produce almost immediately a very flattering portrait light. There are two kinds of umbrellas. There are reflective umbrellas and shoot-through umbrellas. This is a reflective umbrella. You can tell, on this one it's easy to tell, because it's got black on the back. You're not going to shoot through it. You can actually take this black off to turn it into a shoot-through umbrella. This is a silver umbrella, we'll talk about what that means in a minute. And as you can see, I've got my flash, this is a 200-watt strobe, pointed inward. So the light's going to come out of here, it's going to bounce around inside here, and then come blasting out to vaporize…
