Two kinds of seeing

- We usually divide a photographic process into two halves, shooting and post-production. But I think the shooting half can also be split in two because you engage in two different kinds of seeing as a photographer. And a good photographer knows how to quickly switch from one to the other. Think about what happens when you're moving through the world with a camera, you are seeing a 180 degree field of view and you're trying to recognize a single rectangle as being a possible image. I've talked about this before and offer the suggestion that you should not go out looking for photographs, you should simply go out looking for things that interest you or that catch your eye for whatever reason. You can then figure out how to make that interesting thing into a photo.
