Time and grooves

- Time is the most important thing that you can be working on as a bassist. It's important that your time is sturdy and very solid and easy to play with. You and the drummer will provide the foundation for every group that you're a part of. So in practicing time, it's important to work with a metronome or a drum machine and be able to channel your motions so that you can create what I call a groove. A groove is simply a solid feeling, a solid time feeling with emotion that's expressed strongly and powerfully without any wavering. That's what I call a groove. So in learning how to groove, it's important to listen to records of bass players that are masters at grooving, people who make you feel like dancing when you listen to their records. By taking these records and listening to them and saturating yourself with them, you become emotionally involved with these records in the style, and you learn by doing and by…
