- So all of that that I just played came from the Myxolydian mode. That's one possible way that we could approach playing on an A Blues. Another way, though, is by using a different mode, the Dorian mode. Here, I would play off of the fifth degree of each of the individual chords of this A Blues. So, for my A7, I would play E Dorian, right? E is the fifth of the A seventh chord. On the D7 chord, I would play out of A Dorian. A, once again, is the fifth of the D7 chord, and on the E7 chord, I would play out of B Dorian. So, I'm going to improvise over the same chord progression, now using the Dorian mode in this type of way. When I do this, I get kind of what some people consider to be more of a jazz sound.
