Setting a good example

- We can now move to the third corner of our diagram, duty. When we make design decisions and release designs and products and services into the world, we're not only carving paths into the future for our users to follow, we're also carving paths into the future for our competitors and our industry to follow. With every design decision and product release, we grant everyone in our industry implicit permit and license to follow our example, effectively telling our peers, "I found a new path. Come follow me." When these paths lead to what we perceive as good things, we call ourselves pioneers or innovators or disruptors or trendsetters or influencers. But how do we know that our paths lead to good things and better futures?
