- Reggae's an extremely interesting style for the bassist. It incorporates a very free kind of rhythmic playing that's not found in most other musics. Check out the records of Sly and Robbie and Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley and the Wailers, and you'll hear this interesting style of bass. Now, the right hand muting technique used in reggae incorporates the palm and the thumb. If you rest your palm on all the strings, back by the bridge, and then you simply take your thumb, side of your thumb or the thumbnail, and pluck, (thrumming bass notes) you'll get the tone. Now, it's important to roll some extra bass on your tone controls to give you enough bottom, to create a firm foundation, even though you're muting. Check out Marcus Miller and Anthony Jackson for the way they apply this technique. It sounds like this.
