- Privacy and security deserve special mention here because they're so tightly linked both to the tech industry and to ethics. Anytime we deal with other people's data in any way, we're taking on the responsibility of caring for that data and the people who provided it. Data is now more valuable than oil, so it's not surprising there seems to be another announcement of a major data breach pretty much every other week. To put it bluntly, users have a reasonable expectation of absolute data privacy and security. When they log in and give us their data, they expect us to never let that data be accessed by anyone else ever. Our most basic duty of care as custodians of user data is to protect both the security of the data itself and the privacy of our users.
