Primer: Capability approach

- User or human-centered design is a well-established practice we use in design all the time that quite literally puts the user, the human being, at the center of our design. But even in that name you can kind of hear there's something off about it, because we're abstracting the person we're designing for into this tool, and then we use that tool to achieve some goal through the designs. We design something, then we get the user, the person, to do something through that design like open a door, or something like that. And even though this is a well-established practice, there is that crusty element to it that doesn't feel quite right. Now there is another way of approaching this, which is called capability approach. This is actually an economic theory, which blurs the lines between economics and philosophy to create a new branch of moral philosophy which is often bundled together with virtue ethics, but for our purposes…
