- The writer, Neil Gaiman, likes to say, and he attributes this quote to Jerry Garcia, but apparently there's no way of proving that attribution, he likes to say that Jerry said that style is all the stuff you get wrong. Now, I don't think there's any way to come up with a fool-proof definition of a word like style, but I think there's something very interesting about this quote. What he's saying is that the things that people remember and take note of and ultimately associate with you are the things that you do that are out of the ordinary. And so, often when they talk about your style some of the qualities they might mention might be things that you consider to be mistakes or work-arounds. Ringo Starr is a good example. You might have heard him explain that some of his distinctive sound and innovative ideas were simply his trying to manage the fact that he's left handed but he plays a right handed drum kit and so he has to…
