- I like to emphasize the importance of space. I remember playing with several bands that had a percussionist in the group and my style of playing at the time was very low keyed, more or less, still playing still playing hard, but not as much because we had a percussionist that was in the group. And you have to respect that. I mean, if you want to become a better musician do not step on anyone's toes and keep the music you know from getting cluttered. Almost every band that I've ever played in had a percussionist. So I didn't have to play as much. But once that band came along, the first band that came along where there wasn't a percussionist, I felt as though I had to compensate for the lack of one, for the lack of a conga player. And it then required me to use a lot of splash symbols. a lot of woodblocks, timbalis and a lot of hand work on the Toms to try to, like I said, compensate for the lack of that…
