- The duration, or value, of a note is indicated by how it looks. This is a whole note, it lasts for four beats. This is a half note, it lasts for two beats. This is a quarter note, it lasts for one beat. Here is an eighth note, it lasts for 1/2 of a beat. When eighth notes appear in groups, they are beamed together. These are sixteenth notes. A sixteenth note lasts for 1/4 of a beat. Once again, consecutive sixteenth notes are beamed together.
