- I'm going to say one last time, … what is the role of a light, … how does light leave the lighting instrument, … how does the light fall off, where does light go … once it's left the source? … Over time you won't have to ask those questions all the time … you will develop a feel and an understanding … and your own methodologies for lighting. … But when you get stuck, when shadows aren't as dark … as you think they should be, … when there's not light where you do want it … but there is light where you don't want it, … these questions will help you puzzle things out. … To get that feel and understanding, … you need experience and practice, … and I just happen to have a few thoughts about that. … Practicing artificial lighting is more difficult … than practicing composition or exposure or street shooting … because it requires something to shoot … and a space to shoot it in, and transportation to that space … with all your gear. … So if this is a skill you want to learn, … you have to be prepared to invest a little more effort …
