Light spread with a handheld flash

- In that last movie, I used the term "lighting instrument" and it sounds a little pompous. What I mean when I say "lighting instrument" is a light, a continuous light, a flash, a strobe. So why don't I just say a "light"? Because some of these sentences will get confusing if I start talking about light coming from a light. Trust me, some of this explanation is easier to make sense of if I say "lighting instrument" when referring to a piece of lighting hardware. So, our second important lighting question, how does light leave a lighting instrument? Obviously, you turn it on and light flies out. But it flies out with direction and it can be easy to make wrong assumptions about what that direction is. For example, I've got this light, with this big soft box on it. Now later we're going to talk about what a soft box is for.
