- [Instructor] Beyond the data that you can gather within the table and tab views, Screaming Frog provides a few reports. You'll access them by selecting Reports from the menu at the top of the screen. We have Crawl Overview report, Redirect Chains, Canonical Errors, Insecure Content and the SERP Summary. There's also one more that you won't find in this menu but I'll show you how to access your Crawl Path Report at the end of this movie. Let me walk you through a high-level of what all of these mean.
Let's start by selecting the Crawl Overview report. Once we'll do that, we'll need to save the file and then we can open it in your spreadsheet software of choice. Okay, so I've opened up our Crawl Overview report. This report provides a summary of the crawl, including data such as the number of URLs encountered, those blocked by robots.txt, the number crawled, the content type, response codes et cetera use this report to get a high-level overview of your entire crawl.
It's a good summary and it's useful for sharing with stakeholders. Next, let's go back and simply talk about the other types of reports, now that you know how to download them and what they look like when you open them. The process will be the same so I won't be going into the specifics of opening each report. Your Redirect Chains report will map out chains of redirects which is really the number of hops along the way to arrive at the final destination. This is really helpful to identify any loops. A redirect chain that loops can impact your crawl very negatively as Google will get stuck.
The next report is your Canonical Errors. This report highlights errors and issues with canonicals, in particular, this report will show you any canonicals which have a no response, 300 redirect or 400 error. If the link is good, it will not appear. This report also provides data on any URLs which are discovered only via a canonical and are not linked to from the site. There will be an unlinked column in this report and if it's listed as true, you should investigate that in more detail.
If you're using a SSL certificate or running HTTPS pages, your Insecure Content report will show any secure pages which have insecure elements on them. Your SERP report will show you URLs, page titles, meta descriptions and all their respective character lengths. What's nice about this is you can download the data and if you make any changes, you can re-upload the template and use the crawler in what's known as SERP mode. So there's another report I'll mention, known as the Crawl Path report.
Any time you right-click on a URL, you can hover over Export and then choose the Crawl Path Report from the menu. This report will reveal the path the SEO Spider crawled to discover the URL and that can be really useful for deep pages, rather than viewing your in-links. And this Crawl Report should be read from bottom to top. Now you also saw that you can export a list of links in the last movie. Using any of these reports, you might create a list of links or elements that you want to crawl again to see if any issues persist.
Let's say you crawl your site and download a list of all your content. Then let's say you make changes to your site by creating some redirects but you want to make sure you didn't break anything. From the top of the screen, you can check Mode and then choose List. And this will allow you to upload a list from a file or one that you enter manually, you can even paste in the links and what that'll do is send the crawler out and check only the links that you've supplied and that way you can make sure that your content hasn't been damaged by any changes to your site.
So if I made a bunch of changes, I would then upload that list and see if any of them show a 404 or if their 301 redirects are arriving properly. Leverage all the reports and features of Screaming Frog to get a comprehensive overview of the health of your site.
