Intervals

- An interval is the distance between two notes. Whole steps and half steps are two types of intervals we're familiar with, because we use them to build our major and minor scales. Each interval is given a number name, as well as a quality name. The number name tells us the distance between two notes in the musical alphabet. The number names of intervals are easy to learn with this rule. To determine the number name of an interval, begin on one note, and count up or down through the musical alphabet until you reach the next. So let's say you want to find the numeric interval from say C up to A. You would count C as one, D as two, E as three, F as four, G as five, and A as six. The interval from C to A is a sixth. Let's try the same idea with two different notes. If we were to find the distance between, say, D up to G, we would count D as one, E as two, F as three, and G as four.
