Social media really is a tremendous marketing tool—if used properly. Get tips for developing a new social media strategy in times of recession.
- At any time in, and especially during a recession, people start thinking about using social media to grow their following and to bring in potential customers. And social media can be a very powerful marketing strategy, if you use it correctly. So how do you leverage social media effectively? The first thing you need to understand is that social media is a place for you to be useful. It's about people who follow you, it's not about glorifying yourself. So think about how you can be useful to that end viewer, the person who is engaging with you on social media. If you're empathetic and think about what they actually need, that can help you stay away from being too polarizing or damaging, and again, just making sure that what you're putting out is actually useful to the end viewer. Second, make sure you're engaging with people on social media. And of course, you probably already know that you need to engage with people who are following you, but engage with people that you're following, brands and companies. If somebody puts out a tweet and they have a large following, when you comment on that tweet it puts you in front of their audience. Same with LinkedIn. If they share a post, comment on that post, give your insight, give your opinions, and suddenly you're in front of new audience members who might start following you. Finally, social media is a great place for you to find people to collaborate with. Everybody on social media wants to grow their audience just as much as you do. So if you find other brands or individuals who are serving a similar customer, but in a different way, you might be able to do a campaign or some sort of collaboration where you get in front of their audience, they get in front of your audience, and it helps everybody out. At the end of the day, when you're growing your audience, you need to think about why and how somebody would follow you. If you think through a lens of why or how would somebody follow me? That can guide your content.
