- [Instructor] The most important part of every news story is the headline. It's the attention grabber. It will entice your audience in to read more. And it's also the executive summary, the thesis that describes what your audience will hear more about. Without the headline, how do they know what to read? Remember the water cooler from my 4x4 model? This is the thing you need to provide to entice your reader to the next level and it sets the stage for the main point of the piece. I find that when data analysts are creating charts, they tend to be too close to the data and forget the communications aspect of what they're doing, the big picture. They neglect their headlines in a variety of ways with many repercussions. The first mistake is neglecting to think of the headline first.
