Having too much information is never a problem because you can always edit out unnecessary information, and distill the critical information needed. But not having enough information to glean from leads to shallow thinking and less effective design. Remember what Saul Bass said regarding design. "Design is thinking made visual." So it's hard to make an impactful visual design, from a vacuum of information. Using a well-defined creative brief is one way to gather critical information that goes beyond the surface information available to anyone and dives deep into the psyche of a client, giving you insight into their business, product or service.
