Freeze motion
- Andrew, though, has a long and storied career as a dancer so I've asked him to come here and fling himself around the room at high speed so that I can try and freeze him using flash. Now you may think, "well wait a minute, you don't need flash. You can freeze a fast-moving object with shutter speed." And that's absolutely true. The problem is, we're inside under somewhat dim lighting. I want to show you what happens if I actually try to shoot him at, say, 1/500 of a second. That seems like a good shutter speed for freezing action. I also want to shoot at F11 because I'm a little bit worried about focus and so I want to be sure that I've got good, deep depth of field. So here I am at 1/500 of a second, F11, at ISO 800. (shutter click) And what I get is a black frame. I can't use fast shutter speed here to get this shot, there's not enough ambient light to make it work. So I can only freeze him with flash.
