- To talk meaningfully about ethics, it's important to have a basic understanding of the main traditions of moral philosophy. We've been establishing moral philosophy traditions for the past 4,000 years in western society and for much longer in other societies, and almost all our ethical thinking is rooted in one of three main philosophies. Now, over the past 20 or 30 years, we have a fourth branch that's grown in that turns out to be really helpful for us, in specifically, talking about ethics of design and technology. Now, consider any design, product, service, or experience, and how they influence the people and the world they live in. Any design will modify the capabilities of the person experiencing it in some way, either by granting a capability, enabling a capability, limiting a capability, or removing that capability all together.
