Discover your personal creative style

- [Narrator] In this movie, I want to share with you a great resource. This is Marty Neumeier, he's the director of CEO branding at Liquid Agency, based in The Silicone Valley. They develop some of the most engaging brand experiences in the world and Marty believes, in order to achieve your highest creative potential, you need to know your own personal creative style. He calls them metaskills and the book is worth its weight in gold. He teaches creative people, how to improve their skills, and gave me permission to share his metaskills quiz with you, in this course. The quiz asks you 10 questions covering five key categories. Those categories are feeling, seeing, dreaming, making and learning. Now this forms what's called the talent hand print, so if you want to think of it that way and it helps, that's great. So I went ahead and I filled out this metaskills quiz, because I wanted to share it with you, in terms of what it revealed about myself. And when I did that, I got about two questions in, it's a multiple choice, it asks you one question, then it gives you like five responses you can choose from. You can choose one response or two if you want to, but I got stumped on the second question, because I saw almost all of them, I could apply to myself, so I wasn't sure what to choose. And I tweeted Marty and asked him about this and this is how he responded. It's a forced choice quiz, so you have to look inside yourself, to decide what your go to move would be. Think first about projects under your control. Now once he said think first about projects under your control, well all the projects I control myself, through my studio, I know exactly what I'm going to do at any single stage, so that kind of freed me up, I went ahead and I finished the quiz and that's what I want to show you now. So when I finished the quiz, this is what it revealed for me, regarding the feeling, seeing, dreaming, making and learning. It makes up a total of 100%, total, but 40% of that for me, was dreaming. That wasn't a big surprise for me, I'm kind of a big dreamer and 30% was seeing. Once again, not a big surprise. I'm a visual based thinker, making was 20% and 10% was feeling. Now what threw me off, was the 0% in the learning. I was a bit confused about that, so I asked Marty about it and this was his reply. Your hand print contains the answer. You tend to trust logic more than emotion or intuition, so seeing is your go to metaskill. I kind of figured that and it made sense to me, because I dream about something, I see it visually in my head and then I make it. There isn't a whole lot of feeling there, so in that respects, I'm kind of like a creative Vulcan, I guess. But the part that threw me off was the 0% learning, so I Followed up and I asked him more about that, and he replied to that as well, and explained it, that the zero on learning, tells me you'd rather learn by thinking and doing, rather than reading or taking classes. The skills are relative, not absolute. That blew my mind, this nailed it for me and is absolutely true. It's kind of ironic as well, since I write books and I teach to others, even though for myself, I prefer learning in my own way. This was a great resource and I encourage you to take this Metaskills Quiz, and let it give you insight into your own, personal, creative style. Because you might discover something about yourself, you never fully realized. Your creative process can only benefit when you understand how you work best, as you approach any creative project.
