Developing left-hand lead and open-hand approach

- First of all, open it up. Open it up. Just try it and see how comfortable it is to you because you never know. It may be more comfortable than you think but chances are, it's going to be very uncomfortable. It's going to be very awkward to the drummer that is opening up his stick style, sticking style, from cross hand to open hand and using that left hand or that right hand depending on which side the snare and the high hat is on. I suggest taking it very slow, very slow. As I would say for anything that you've learned for the first time, if you're learning how to drive, you want to take your time at it. You don't want to jump in the car and go flying off somewhere because you're not used to that. It's something that you have to take your time with and take your time, I mean, taking it very, very slow. Slow as you possibly can. It goes for any lick that you learn for the first time. When I learned the Billy Cobham, you know, the four-stroke lick, it took me a while. It took me a couple of months to learn that, but it was every day of shedding just that one lick. I was a youngster at the time, but it was something that I wanted to learn and when I got it, I just used the daylights out of it, and I still do.
