- Think for a minute about pictures you've seen of photographers in the 19th century. You know those guys who always had a cloth over their head and they were bent over looking through some kind of box. That type of camera that they were using was often very distinctive for a couple of features. First it used a very, very big negative. That meant they could make very big enlargements and get really good detail. But second, very often the lens on one of those cameras was mounted on a front plane that could tilt and move around and the film was often mounted on a plane that could tilt and move around. So because you could move all of these things around you could really control the geometry in your scene. You could straighten out lines that were receding into the distance or up into the sky to correct perspective and that kind of thing. If you work with an SLR these days you might be able to get the same kind of functionality…
