Learn how to convert data types using the built-in conversion function in Presto.
- [Instructor] Sometimes you're going to need to…convert between different data types in Presto,…in addition to working with data in general…and so there are some built in functions to Presto…that I want to walk through here.…And there are the common ANSI SQL ones,…but there is one that's interesting…which I'll show you which is kind of unique.…So first off, the way to cast data…from one data type to another is to…use that function called cast.…So we'll start by logging into Presto,…and from here what we'll do is we will just cast some data.…So we'll do select cast, and we'll do current date,…which if you recall, returns the current date,…as varchar.…
Now I mention that one specifically…because in Hive you may be thinking string,…but because we're using ANSI SQL,…you use varchar instead of string.…It's just the ANSI SQL data type…which is what you use when you're working in Presto,…regardless of whether or not the data comes from…a system like Hive, which uses different data types.…So there you go, that was pretty straightforward.…
Data science expert Ben Sullins helps you get up to speed with Presto, and leverage it to accomplish a wide-range of data science and analytics tasks. He uses different interfaces with Presto—such as R and Tableau—and digs into the expressive SQL language that Presto offers for your analysis. At the end of this course, you'll know the key concepts of Presto and how to use them to take full advantage of your modern big data system.
