Anatomy of a handheld flash

- This is a typical hand held flash. This one is made by a company called Cactus. Obviously Cactus is not a camera maker that you've ever heard of and in fact they don't make cameras. While your camera vendor likely makes a flash system for your camera, there are also lots of third party options out there and we'll talk about those later. A flash will always have a foot and some will have a metal foot while others have a plastic foot. Now you may think I'm getting really picky here, but a few years ago I knocked over my tripod and my camera which had a flash on it. It hit the ground and the thing that broke was the plastic foot on the flash. If you have a choice, you want a flash with a metal foot. This is a fairly typical size for a flash. It's got four double A batteries in it and this thing weights in at about a pound. So if you're thinking, "I want a flash to serve as a fill light "when I'm shooting candid portraits out on the street." Then you might want to think twice before…
