- My dad used to say to me that he didn't mind what I did when I grew up. He just wanted me to be happy. Now I kind of know how he feels as I hope the same for my daughter. But actually, being happy is sometimes really hard. Some days I think I might have more luck becoming an astronaut. Anyhow, I've realized that happiness isn't everything and negative emotions can actually be there to help us. You just have to sort out how to relate to them in a healthy way. So when we're feeling angry, rather than suppressing it, which can have a negative effect on the brain, explore the cause of this emotion. Anger can direct our attention to what needs sorting out. Another is fear. That's our natural response to threat and it can help us keep safe if we're actually in danger.
