We've Published Our 2,000th Course!

lynda.com releases our 2000th course

With a variety of courses published each week at lynda.com, it’s easy to get distracted. So we’re pleased to take a moment to glance up from our busy release schedule to celebrate a significant milestone: lynda.com has just published its 2,000th course.

To put this in perspective, in April 2011 lynda.com featured 1,000 courses, which means we’ve now doubled our library in just over two years. From the initial concepts of a course, to screenwriting, to the production, camerawork, and editing of each individual video, 2,000 courses adds up to years of production time: no small feat.

Reflecting on my father and Steve Jobs

Lynda and her father, 1996.

My father and me, 1996.

My father passed in July 2011, and it was a time of great reflection for my family and me. Hearing of Steve Jobs‘ passing affected me intensely and has also spurred deep reflection—though of course different than that for a parent, but deeper than you might imagine for a person I have never met and only admired from afar. Like so many others who are writing their Steve Jobs stories, I feel compelled to share mine.

I know I’m not the first or last to write about Steve’s passing, but that’s not important. I had a similar experience with my father—I couldn’t stop thinking about his passing and what his influence had been on me and my family, but I needed to process it a bit before I could formalize my thoughts. Some of my reflections are personal, and some of them have to do with our company.

The lynda.com story: Lynda shares how it started

Take a seat in the Brooks Institute auditorium with the Santa Barbara chapter of AIGA and enjoy watching Bruce Heavin and Lynda Weinman as they present the history of lynda.com to an audience for the first time. The lynda.com co-founders share stories of how their careers, relationship, and company started and evolved, and how their vision and high standards have brought together a team insistent on excellence. This is an engaging, fascinating inside look into the heart and soul of a recognized leader in software training.

We’ll be posting a few segments of that night’s recordings here on the blog, starting with Lynda sharing some early memories and educational experiences. We invite you to view the entire lynda.com story on lynda.com.

In this video, Lynda opens her heart and shares her earliest recollections: Her childhood, how she discovered an alternative path to education and put herself through school, and how she developed a work ethic that shaped her personal direction and ultimately, the direction of lynda.com.

Get paid back in improved productivity: PCWorld reviews lynda.com for business

PCWorld's The Cost Cutter blog gives kudos to lynda.com for improving employee productivity and boosting business efficiency. That's exactly what we strive to do.

We’re really proud that lynda.com got this great review in PCWorld’s “The Cost Cutter” business blog.

“The nominal amount you’ll spend there could pay you back in improved productivity, as your workers become proficient at all of their applications,” says the review.

“If you or your employees are just muddling through Office, QuickBooks, Filemaker, Photoshop, or any other application, you’re wasting potential productivity. Invest just a few hours, learning your applications with video tutorials, and your business could get a boost in its efficiency.”
