Boost Your Creativity: The 21-Day Drawing Challenge

We all need creativity in our lives—whether we’re students, executives, scientists, designers, office managers, writers, teachers, or anyone else. So lynda.com created a new course designed to unleash and hone your creativity.

The 21-Day Drawing Challenge with Von Glitschka starts today, offering a fun new drawing challenge each weekday (Monday through Friday) for 21 days. The final challenge will be August 29.

The goal isn’t to turn you into a professional illustrator or fine artist—it’s about improving your drawing skills and creative thinking, no matter if you’re an expert or have never drawn more than a doodle on a notepad.

Dating back to 30,000 BC, drawing is a critical part of both human communication and personal expression. It improves hand-eye coordination, as well as your understanding of form and shape, and lets you quickly communicate ideas that may be difficult to put into words.

Each daily drawing challenge can take as long as you like, from a few minutes to a full hour; it’s up to you. We recommend roping in a friend to commit to the 21-day challenge with you—you can keep each other motivated and accountable. And be sure to add daily alarms to your calendar so you’ll remember to check in with the course and try the latest challenge.

What you’ll need

You’ll just need five common items:

  • PencilAny pencil will work, but Von likes Tombow MONO due to its soft lead, which makes it easy to shade and create dark blacks.
  • PenAny pen will work, but Von prefers his trusty PaperMate Flair for drawing.
  • Eraser: Any eraser will work, but if you use the Tombow MONO pencil, they make a great matching eraser by the same name.
  • Scissors: Any are fine as long as they’re sharp.
  • Paper: Technically, you can draw on anything, but you’ll want quality paper that won’t rip easily when you erase.
