- There's something about the word deadline that puts a hitch in your step and makes you want to leap into action. But I've learned the hard way that's actually a mistake. The first thing you need to do when you're assigned to write something under a deadline is to set expectations for the project ahead of you. Let me explain. When we set out to do our own projects, most of us are pretty good at determining before we begin whether we have the bandwidth to get the job done. We look at the deadline and consider other obligations we have between now and then. Next we determine whether we have all the resources to do it justice and how tricky it would be to get the ones we're missing. And we weigh the amount of effort it'll take to complete the work against the advantages of completing it. It's your basic life coping strategy.
