We've been breaking down high-concept ideas into four essential ingredients and discussing each ingredient in detail to get a better idea of what a high-concept idea is and how you can create your own to help sell your novel or screenplay. In the last two lectures, we talked about the fish out of water and the looming conflict. And in this lecture, we're going to talk about the hook. You might have heard the word hook before, as in your story has to have a hook, or the idea has a nice hook, but what exactly is a hook? Well, here's my definition for it. The bait that lures people into the story, usually in the form of an aspirational, fearful, or escapism element. Now, if you're wondering what an aspirational, fearful, or escapism element is, hold tight. We'll get to that in a second. But for now, let's talk about the first part of this definition.
