- [Narrator] One of the first big sections you'll notice in your contract is a section about royalties. This will include an extensive breakdown of your royalty payment structure. Remember that your advance has to be fully recouped or earned out before you're paid any royalties. Until then, all royalties that would have been owed to you go to pay back your publisher for your advance. In this section about royalties, you may see numerous subsections, like hardcover editions, paperback editions, mass market paperback editions, and electronic editions, to name a few of the big ones. These are just different versions of your same book. For instance, if your publisher originally publishes your book in hardcover, they may choose to later republish it in paperback, and perhaps even later publish it in a mass market paperback, which are the smaller, thicker books you usually see sold in supermarkets and drugstores.
