Reversing into sentences: Part 1
- When we're trying to get stronger imagery into our writing, we want to carefully consider the structure of our sentences, and there's a particular habit in writing that isn't in itself bad or wrong, but something that you should be aware of. It's the habit that I call reversing into sentences, and here is an example of that. As part of its campaign to improve the nation's health, the charity has committed thousands of dollars to fund several new projects. Notice how the reversing into the active part of the sentence is happening there. The active part is the charity committing thousands of dollars. Now, I want you to understand that there is nothing at all wrong, per se, with that type of sentence. You don't need to avoid this way of reversing in altogether. In fact, if done consciously, reversing in can be quite a cool stylistic device, giving a variety to straight sentences that might otherwise sound too samey.
