Matters of style

- White papers are meant to be authoritative. They put forth a particular point of view with confidence and clarity. But how do you create that authoritative tone? Let's start with graphics. In its original governmental form, there were no purely decorative graphics. The ones that did appear were informational: tables, charts, maps, and things like that. These kinds of data-rich graphics add the most value to your paper. By the way, we have an excellent course on learning data visualization if you'd like some ideas on how to best translate facts into images. Illustrational graphics can also add worthwhile information. For our paper about solar energy, for example, we might have a photo that shows a typical installation, perhaps with text and arrows indicating parts of interest. Graphical text elements like sidebars and pull quotes can draw the eye and emphasize important points. And they're memorable to people who only skim the paper.
