- When you're flitting about the internet there's really only one reason you stop to read someone's blog post, and I'm going to tell you what that reason is. But first, I'm going to tell you what that reason isn't. You don't stop to read a blog post because the writer loves to hear himself talk. You certainly don't do it because you have nothing better to do with your time or have trouble finding anything to read these days. The only reason you'll put a few minutes of your extremely busy life on hold long enough to read a blog post is this: it's offering something you want or need at that moment. In other words, it's useful to you in some way. It's informative or helpful. It educates you, even challenges you. Unlike, say, a diary entry, which is written only to serve the writer herself, a compelling blog post isn't a navel-gazing meditation on a subject or a self-serving rant.
