- We communicate so rapidly these days that it can be difficult to discern professional from social communication. And sometimes that overlap can even feel acceptable. As you establish yourself as a professional, it's important to maintain those boundaries, particularly in your writing. Errors of tone and style lean mostly toward not being formal enough. A common example is in your salutation and closing. Your salutation is your greeting. And the overly casual "hey" seems to pervade both business and social correspondence. Make sure you pay attention to titles and proper salutations. In our current environment, calling someone by their first name can feel natural. But use their title and last name until they introduce themselves to you otherwise. And never use the robotic, Dear first and last name. When signing off, "sincerely" is always appropriate. "Cheers" can be too flip, "love" too sentimental, "regards" too stiff. "Sincerely" hits the right note and is never out of place. By…
